Universities can have the benefit of managerial expertise and community representation, provided we do not try to achieve those objectives through one body. </P> <P>By all means, let's aim for a council that has strategic financial and marketing expertise. But let's also set up for each university, in your words, "a separate consultative forum" so that the university council can draw upon community inputs in its decision making and its funding negotiations with the federal Government. </P> <P>Professions Australia, representing 200,000 professionals, has proposed this reform to the Senate inquiry. We have said also that consultation requirements should be written into the university corporate governance principles and that effective community consultation should be a condition of additional funding. Only with such consultation will higher education decision makers be kept properly informed of needs for professional graduates.</P> <P>Barry J. Grear AO <BR>Rostrevor, SA</P> </body>
